wisdom discern good and evil

Genres are categories of literature, each with its own tone and techniques. The Bible uses a handful of genres—narrative and law, prophecy and letters, wisdom literature, and apocalyptic literature. Understanding the genre in which the passage is written can help guide our reading. Follow the Biblical Genre Series to get the most out of your Bible reading.
The literary genre in the Bible known as “Wisdom literature” is a group of five books that tells us about who God created us to be. Each book presents a unique perspective on how God can be a part of our daily lives. Each of these books—Proverbs, Song of Songs, Ecclesiastes, Job, and Psalms—reflects a different facet of the human experience. If you want to know how to live well, these books are a great starting point. If you feel life isn’t fair—come to these texts.
Wisdom literature starts from the premise that we were created by a good God, but that our humanity has been marred by sin—in every aspect of life. Starting there, the books explore how that brokenness affects us, and what we can do about it. Basically, the practice of discerning between good and evil in our lives is what the Bible calls wisdom.

Proverbs

In our culture of self-help blogs, Proverbs gives us what we’re really craving. This book is a collection of wise sayings—simple, but profound. The world of Proverbs is one where doing good things—like working hard, saving money, and being faithful to your spouse—brings blessing. If you want to know how to be a good friend, or how to figure out what you should be devoting your time and energy to, read Proverbs. When you read Proverbs, keep in mind, that wisdom is often personified—sometimes as a woman, and sometimes as a mysterious person who was with God since the beginning of time. This is important, because it hints that when we’re seeking wisdom, we’re looking for a real person. Centuries later, Jesus claimed to be the truth behind all wisdom (John 14:6). When we seek true wisdom, we’re seeking God.

Song of Songs

Song of Songs is the ancient equivalent of a romantic love song between two young lovers. In this book, the man and woman wax rapturous about each other as they anticipate and consummate marriage. Scholars differ over the specifics of character and narrative, but all agree that these songs show an ideal marriage relationship, marked by loyalty, love, and delight. Some people interpret this book as a picture of the richness of God’s love for God’s people, (a metaphor the apostle Paul later picks up on to describe the relationship between Christ and his church). Read this book when you want to learn about God’s definition of love.

Ecclesiastes

Think of Johnny Cash singing “Hurt” mournfully—that’s the preacher in Ecclesiastes. His cynicism is jarring next to the idealized lives in Proverbs and Song of Songs. The preacher is frustrated by life’s seeming meaninglessness. His famous refrain “all of life is vanity under the sun” expresses the painful lack of purpose we often feel. The key to understanding Ecclesiastes is the phrase “under the sun,” which denotes an existence apart from divine grace. Instead of living under the rule of an attentive, just, and powerful God, the preacher has tried to live without acknowledging God. He finds this life futile, meaningless. Even people who do acknowledge God experience seasons of doubt, depression and despair. We’re afraid that what we do each day doesn’t matter. Ecclesiastes walks us through those times, and brings us out looking to God, to whom everything is important.

Job

But don’t people suffer desperate loss even when they are seeking God’s grace? The poetic book of Job describes a man who has done everything right—yet God allows terrible suffering in his life. Why do such bad things happen to good people? How could God be all-powerful when there is so much evil, pain, and death in the world? Job cries out his questions to God, rejecting the simplistic cause-and-effect view of his friends. He longs for an advocate who will present his case to God. Consider this book when you are suffering, when you feel you’ve lost hope, and desperately need God to intervene.

Psalms

The Psalms tie together the pain and cynicism of Job and Ecclesiastes with the elation, risk, and longing of the Proverbs and Song of Songs. Here is the full range of human experience. The Psalms are a group of prayers and songs, expressing, with total honesty, all that the other books have described. The people praying these psalms shout out their doubt, confusion, grief, anxiety, joy, and worship to their Creator. Throughout the psalms runs a current of hope for restoration to individuals and to the whole community. Even in pain, the psalmists hang on to God’s promised deliverance. Whatever you feel, there is a psalm for you to pray. Try paraphrasing a psalm in your own words, and direct it to God.

How it works

What if you’re not wise? What if your marriage is blighted? What if you hate your work and are never satisfied? What if you have suffered devastating loss or persistent failure, despite your life of faith? Wisdom literature brings all of these questions to God, and at the same time, alternately conceals and reveals—like vapor—an answer to come.
As you read, go slowly, and invite God to be with you. As you pray for wisdom (Psalm 119:73), God will give it to you (James 1:5).

A Prayer for Personal Healing

God, you know me so well. You created me. You know the number of hairs on my head, and you even know the thoughts conceived in my heart before I ever vocalize them. You've told us to come to you and ask for every need of life. You are Jehovah-Rapha, the God who heals, and you have the final word on my destiny, the number of years I'll live and serve you on earth.
I'm coming to you today as your child, longing to hear from you and asking for your divine healing. There's so much I don't understand about life. But I do know that with one touch, one word, you can make me whole. Please forgive me of my sins, cleanse me of my unrighteousness, and begin your healing from the inside out.I don't always know what your will is Lord, especially in times like now, when I desperately seek your face. I offer you no promises, no bargains, no deals to exchange for my health. I simply bow my heart before you to tell you the desire of my heart: that I want to spend as many years as I can loving you here, loving others, and wanting to become more like you. However you choose to accomplish that is up to you—and okay with me. If you use doctors to provide healing, give them wisdom to know what to do. Regardless of how you accomplish it, the healing you give is always miraculous. And you deserve all the praise.
I absolutely believe you have the power to heal. You demonstrated that on earth, and you still heal in miraculous ways today. Even when my faith is weak, you say it is enough, and my love for you is strong. And I know you already hold my heart and life in your hands. It's up to you. If I can bring you more glory through healing, then that's what I ask for. That's what I desire.
But if your answer is no, or not now, I know that your grace is sufficient for me. Ultimately, I want your will to be my will. I look forward to spending an eternity with you. But Lord, if you have planned still more for me to do here on this earth, I not only need and want your physical healing, Lord, but a thorough, deep-down cleansing and strengthening—a whole-hearted renewal of all that I am. Because all that I am is yours. Use this trial to strengthen me from a "what-if" faith to a "no-matter-what" faith. And no matter what, I choose to honor you and give you glory.
In Jesus's name, Amen.

How to Pray for Healing - Max Lucado

A Short Prayer for Healing for Friends

Lord, your Word speaks promises of healing and restoration and I thank you for the miracles you still perform today. Today I claim those promises over my friend. I believe in the healing power of faith and prayer and I ask you to begin your mighty work in the life of my friend. Please reach down and surround my friend with supernatural peace and strength and give her the faith to believe that all things are possible for you. Protect her from Satan's lies and discouragement and let her miraculous healing begin. Amen.

A Prayer for Healing and Grace

Dear God,
We confess our need for you today. We need your healing and your grace. We need hope restored. We need to be reminded that you work on behalf of those you love, constantly, powerfully, completely. Forgive us for trying to fix our situations all on our own. Forgive us for running all different directions and spinning our wheels to find help, when true help and healing must be found first in You. Forgive us for forgetting how much we need you, above everyone and everything else. We come to you and bring you the places we are hurting. You see where no one else is able to fully see or understand. You know the pain we've carried. The burdens. The cares. You know where we need to be set free. We ask for your healing and grace to cover every broken place. Every wound. Every heartache. Thank you that you are Able to do far more than we could ever imagine. Thank you for your Mighty Power that acts on behalf of your children. We reach out to you, and know that you are restoring and redeeming every place of difficulty, every battle, for your greater glory. Thank you that you will never waste our pain and suffering. We love you. We need you today.
In Jesus' Name, Amen

A Prayer for Healing Sick Family and Friends

Lord Jesus, thank you that you love [name of person who needs healing]. I know that you hate what their illness is doing to them/me. I ask that you would heal this disease, that you would have compassion and bring healing from all sickness.
Your word says in Psalm 107:19-20 that when we call out to you the Eternal one you will give the order, heal and rescue us from certain death. In the Bible, I have read of miraculous healing and I believe that you still heal the same way today. I believe that there is no illness you cannot heal after all the bible tells of you raising people from the dead so I ask for your healing in this situation.
I also know from my experience of life on earth that not everyone is healed. If that happens here than keep my heart soft towards you, help me to understand your plan and help me to be excited about heaven.
God, I thank you that [name of person who needs healing] belongs to you and that you are in control of everything that happens from our first breath to our last sigh.
Amen.

Healing Bible Verses

Proverbs 4:20-22
My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words.  Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart;  for they are life to those who find them and health to a man's whole body.
Psalm 107:19-20
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He sent forth his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave. Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men.
Jeremiah 17:14
Heal me, O LORD, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise.
Mark 5:34
He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering."
James 5:16
Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

prayer before communion

Communion is a sacred time for you as a follower of Jesus. But before you participate in this memorable occasion, take time to spend some reflective moments in self-examination. What does that mean? How should you pray? While this is an individual matter between you and God, here are some prayer thoughts that might help you as you prepare for this beautiful time of remembrance.

Lord Jesus, I bow before you in humility and ask You to examine my heart today. Show me anything that is not pleasing to You. Reveal any secret pride, any unconfessed sin, any rebellion or unforgiveness that may be hindering my relationship with You. I know that I am Your beloved child, having received You into my heart and life and having accepted Your death as penalty for my sinfulness. The price You paid covered me for all time, and my desire is to live for You.
As I take the bread representing Your life that was broken for me, I remember and celebrate Your faithfulness to me and to all who will receive You. I can't begin to fathom the agonizing suffering of Your crucifixion. Yet You took that pain for me. You died for me! Thank You, Jesus. Thank You for Your extravagant love and unmerited favor. Thank You that Your death gave me life—abundant life now, and eternal life forever. As You instructed Your disciples, I, too, receive this bread in remembrance of You.
And in the same way, as I take this cup representing Your blood poured out from a splintered cross, I realize that You were the supreme sacrifice for all my sin: past, present, and future. Because of Your blood shed for me, and Your body broken for me, I can be free from the power and penalty of sin. Thank You for Your victory over death. You took the death that I deserved. You took my punishment. Your pain was indeed my gain. And today I remember and celebrate the precious gift of life You gave me through the blood that You spilled.
But while my relationship is secure with you, I know sin can break our fellowship at times. I’m still human, and I often forget who I am and Whose I am. You want to convict and correct me, not shame me. You love me like a perfect parent. You’ll never disown me or leave me. You love me no matter what. But sin hurts both my heart and Yours. So before I take communion today, I’m asking You to truly search my heart and reveal hidden things for which to ask Your forgiveness.
Each time I take communion, Lord, I want to recommit my life, my heart, my thoughts, my everything to You. Fill me today with Your powerful Spirit. As I leave this place, help me to hold this fresh remembrance and the story that never grows old close to my heart. Help me to share its message faithfully as You give opportunity.
In Your Precious name,
Amen
